Many are describing facial patches as a “more affordable and less invasive” version of Botulinum Toxin, and while that may seem like a bold claim, the instant results are not something to grumble about.

While silicone and hydrogel patches are currently lapping up the limelight, a relatively new and arguably more effective technology is sitting on the sidelines waiting for its turn. That’s right, we’re talking about hyaluronic microneedle patches.

Now, we know what you’re thinking: needles? Ick! But it’s not as scary as it seems, we promise. Microneedle patches have been designed to be completely pain-free, delivering results that really make you go: wow!

So, if you’ve been searching for a way to get smoother, tighter, and bouncier-looking skin and are interested in how microneedle face patches work, you’ve come to the right place.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy or dermarolling, is a cosmetic procedure that involves pinpricks from tiny needles to cause slight injury. Now, before you click away in horror, just know there is some method to the madness!

While causing deliberate injury to our faces doesn’t seem like an ideal Sunday afternoon, microneedling is actually a pretty straightforward and painless procedure. The tiny needles enter just below the skin surface (so far different from your typical injection or blood test) which causes micro-injuries within the tissue, in turn triggering healing and repair mode.

Once the repair signal has been sent, the skin responds by making new tissue that is rich in collagen; aka the magic ingredient.

As we know, the skin loses collagen as we age, which is one of the main reasons why wrinkles and fine lines begin to form. Microneedling encourages the skin to make new collagen-rich tissue, resulting in a smoother, tighter, and more even texture.

The entire procedure typically takes 2 hours, and a topical anesthetic will be applied to numb the skin beforehand.

The downside to microneedling is one season may cost anywhere from $200 to an eyewatering $800, and in some cases, 4 or 5 sessions may be needed. The good news is there are alternative methods that are less expensive, less invasive, and can be done from the comfort of your own home.

Hyaluronic Acid for Hydration in Depology Microneedling patches

Why Hyaluronic Acid?

With the plethora of microneedle patches comes a long list of brands that supercharge their products with ingredients. The main ingredient that you have to look out for is hyaluronic acid, which can be found in both Dēpology’s Deepcare+ Serum-Infused Micro Dart Patches and Serum-Infused Depuffing & Brightening Micro Dart Patches.

Hyaluronic acid (also known as HA) is the hydrating powerhouse that can hold up to a whopping 1000 times its weight in water. HA binds with water molecules and collagen to trap the acid into our skin, preventing it from evaporating.

Just like collagen, the naturally-occurring HA found within our bodies begins to decrease with age, which leaves us with dryer skin that quickly develops wrinkles and fine lines. When we include HA within skincare products it gives our complexion an instant moisture boost.

Now, simply putting hyaluronic acid on top of the skin is not of any use to us. We need a way for the HA to penetrate the inner layers of the skin; hence why we use them in microneedle face patches. When we use hyaluronic microneedle patches we get plumper, hydrated, and glowing appearance.

Other ingredients to look out for in patches include:

  • Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a high-performance ingredient that works to suppress the transfer of melanin (a substance in your body that produces pigmentation) to the top layer of your skin. This ingredient targets dark spots and leaves you with glowing and brightened skin. Niacinamide can also help minimize pore appearance by keeping the skin moisturized and smooth.

You can find niacinamide in our When Should You Use Niacinamide?

  • Amino Acids

Amino acids have been used in skin care for years to promote collagen process. With an increase in collagen comes improvements in firmness, banishing signs of fine lines and wrinkles. Amino acids work to increase moisture within the skin, leaving behind a plumper appearance.

You can find amino acids in our Deepcare+ Serum-Infused Micro Dart Patches.

  • Black Caviar

Black caviar is an emollient active ingredient that works to increase moisture levels and hydration, as well as plump fine lines and wrinkles. One of Dēpology’s favorite things about black caviar is its ability to smooth the skin by lowering inflammation levels.

You can find black caviar in our Black Caviar Collagen Under Eye Patches.

Do Hyaluronic Microneedle Patches Actually Work?

When used every 2-3 nights over the span of a couple of weeks, it is clear to see the improvements in the skin when using microneedle face patches. In fact, you will be able to see instant results, but they will not last without using the product routinely (just like any other skincare product!)

A study took place in South Korea in 2017, where 34 women who has mild to moderate crow’s feet tested hyaluronic acid microneedle patches. They split the group, and half used the patches, while the other half used HA essence twice a week over 8 weeks.

When the results came back, it showed that the wrinkles were significantly reduced and the skin elasticity significantly increased, more so with the microneedle patches, meaning the patches are more effective than the essence. It also showed that there was no skin irritation within the 34 women tested.

So, while all of our skin is different, hyaluronic microneedle patches will work well on the majority of people, showing significant signs of improvement when it comes to fine lines and wrinkles

How To Use Microneedle Patches?

As we mentioned earlier, it is pretty straightforward when it comes to using patches. Take our Deepcare+ Serum-Infused Micro Dart Patches for example; this microneedle eye patch can be used in 3 simple steps.

  1. Cleanse and tone the skin before using.
If you have a favorite serum we recommended applying that to the area and letting it absorb before applying the patches. (If you don’t have a favorite serum, you can always check out our
Matrixyl® 3000 Collagen Serum which complements these patches perfectly.)

  2. Carefully remove the hyaluronic microneedle patches from the packaging and position them directly over the problem area; we especially love these patches for our under-eyes.

  3. Gently press on the dart area for 3 seconds to allow the needles to slightly prick the skin; this will allow the active ingredients to dissolve and the serum to get to work. We recommend leaving the patches for at least 2 hours, or to reap the full effects, overnight.
